Q:
My Queen Palms are turning Yellow and not growing?
A: Queen Palms are not native to the Southwest Deserts; therefore
they do not get enough nutrients in order to grow the best.
We recommend every 3 weeks fertilizer program with our Moon
Dust 16-8-4 and our Moon Valley Palm Supplement 8-0-8.
Queen Palms along with other Valley favorites' Pigmy Date Palm
will have a better look in about 1 or 2 months. Be sure to deep
watering Queens and Pygmys 2 to 3 times a week when the temperature
start to be above 100 degrees or greater
Q: My Bougainvillea and my Rose bushes all have this half
circle taken out, they are starting to look like Swiss cheese
|
 |
A: This is due to
the Leaf Cutter Bee that cuts the leaf segments with their hind
legs and then proceeds to roll the leaf to make a nest. This
is not going to ruin your plants and it will go away after a
few weeks. You can try spraying with Ferti Lome Triple Action
to try to help, but mostly the problem will resolve itself.
Q. My Citrus are in full Bloom, is now a good time to fertilize?
A: It would be better to wait until the Tree is done blooming,
if you were to apply fertilizer during this time and did not
get enough water to properly dilute the fertilizer you could
very easily burn the blooms off the tree. Once the Citrus are
done blooming then it's recommended to go ahead and fertilize
using Moon Dust 16-8-4. Make sure you follow the directions
that are written on the bag for best results. It is recommended
that you fertilize 3 times a year March-April, June-July, and
again September-October. Be sure to fertilize at the drip line
for the best results, the drip line is the outer most branches
of your Citrus
Q: My Citrus Tree is dropping a lot of fruit?
A: This may be just normal thinning process that goes on during
the first month's of fruit development. If this continues then
check to make sure you are deep watering your trees every 7-10
days and that you have your water wells out to the drip line
of the tree which is the outer most branches. When the summer
heat of 100 plus degree heat arrives the watering schedule should
be every 7 days for 1 - 2 hours on trees with 4 - 6 inch drunks,
trees with 2 - 3inch at least one hour and 2inch or less of
trunk at least 45 minutes. Water should never overflow tree
well while watering.
Be sure to check your irrigation system emitters to be sure
they are dispensing the correct flow rate and also add new emitters,
as the tree grows so does its water needs
Q: My Ash Tree leaves are drying up along the edges?
A: This usually occurs during our summer months when the extreme
temperatures of 115+ degree heat occur in the Valley. It happens
when the Ash tree is not getting deep watering or frequency
of watering, or is not in a timely manor. The best watering
schedule would be twice weekly when temperature is 100 plus
degrees and 3 times weekly when it's over 115 degrees. If your
Ash tree is newly planted we also recommend wrapping the trunk
to keep the trunk from scorching the first year while the tree
is becoming established.
Q: When is a good time to prune my citrus?
A: You prune Citrus only to correct its growth rate or to remove
old or dying wood. Citrus will bloom and bear fruit on all branches,
if you prune heavy one year it will limit the amount of fruit
production the following year.
Q: Why do I see the trunks of Citrus painted white?
A: The trunks are painted white for 3 reasons
1 Decorative
2 To keep the trunk from sun scorching
3 To keep insects and fungi from entering the wood
We now carry paint that is brown or tan in color so it looks
more natural in the Landscape. Please be sure paint that is
blended for this purpose, do not use interior or exterior paint
for the home, this can cause severe damage to the Citrus tree
Q: My Australian Bottle Tree is turning yellow and thinning
out?
A: Australian Bottle trees due best when planted in gravel or
well drained soils. The planting in a lawn area where the yard
is watered several times a week will cause this condition to
occur.
When installing irrigation, have one system or valve for
Trees, Shrubs, and Lawn or in other words not all the eggs will
be in one basket
Q: My Agaves are collapsing and just not looking very good?
A: Agave are attacked by a grub that eats at the heart of the
Agave and destroys the plant. The grubs are from a Beetle that
lays their egg cases in or around the Agave. As a preventative
use Kill a Grub from May thru September monthly to keep
your Agaves from being destroyed.
Q: My Tipu are turning yellow and dropping all of their leaves?
The tree looks really ugly right now…. are they dying?
A: Tipus will drop all of their leaves from mid February thru
March in pre-preparation for the new foliage and flowers that
are about come out. Once you see the new foliage start to appear
we recommend that you fertilize with Moon Dust 16-8-4
from March thru September for best growth and development
Q: My Hibiscus and Lantanas are turning yellow and not growing?
A: Both Hibiscus and Lantanas need to be in well draining areas
and be watered twice weekly, check to see how often your system
is dispensing water and how wet the ground is prior to your
water cycle. You may need to make some minor adjustments and
fertilize monthly with Moon Dust 16-8-4
Q: Is it a good to trim my Fan Palms and exposé the trunks?
A: The Palms will grow just as good peeled or not peeled. By
peeling the trunks keeps the area around them cleaner and fewer
insects problems. The trunks are neater and have a much more
"curb appeal" when selling your home. As with all Palms in the
Valley it is best to fertilize 3 times a year from March thru
September with Moon Dust 16-8-4 and Moon Valley Palm
Supplement 8-0-8
Q: My Citrus fruit is very dry or pithy inside, what cause this?
A: The Citrus Tree may not have received enough water during
the summer along with regular fertilizing or may have been nipped
by frost the prior winter. In either case remove all the fruit
and discard and allow the tree to try again and be sure to fertilize
as recommended
Q: My Citrus leaves are crinkled and deformed,
A: Citrus in the Southwest are common to Leaf Thrip and usually
attack the younger less mature Citrus. The Thrips travel on
our dusty winds through the Valley. Late in the evening try
hosing of the foliage and spray every ten days with Fert
Lome Triple Action this will eliminate and control the problem
Q: My Queen Palms are not looking so good, the new growth
is falling over and has frizzle look.
A: Most likely the Palm has Heart Rot and needs to be treated
with Bordeaux fungicide. The ratio to mix is 1cup in
2 cups of warm to mildly hot water to help dissolve the powder.
The thickness should be that of melted ice cream so it is thick
enough that it will stay around the growing point and soak its
way in. This should be repeated every 7 - 10days until you see
new growth that is unaffected. You should also fertilize monthly
with Moon Palm Supplement 8-0-8 and Moon Dust 16-8-4
to help strengthen and assist in new growth. Be sure water out
away from the trunk at 2 - 3 feet on established Palms and newly
planted one stay within the new well
