An Agave parryi variety that is native to northern Mexico, the Artichoke Agave, (Agave parryi var. truncata) is not an edible artichoke but rather an attractive succulent valued for its dramatic foliage color. The dazzling silver-blue leaves are abundant and make this agave a great bright accent in any low water landscape such as in rock gardens, and create an impressive sight when mass planted in any landscape! We also like to plant them as an effective barrier along property lines and like most succulents, are an excellent addition to any firewise landscape. Their compact size makes them suitable for a broad range of landscape uses! Grow them in a decorative pot or plant them in the ground, they are beautiful plants no matter how you choose to grow them.
Artichoke Agave has a moderate growth rate and thrives in a spot that gets plenty of full sun exposure. Once established, these waterwise plants are drought tolerant with little to moderate watering needs. Also, if you do not have a green thumb you will love Agave parryi var. truncata because they are an easy care plant!
Anyone who collects or wants to start collecting agave will want to add this distinctive Artichoke Agave to their collection. They also are the perfect companion to plants such as Sedum, Aloe, and Red Yucca, all of which are grown by us in our local climate and available at our nurseries throughout the Southwest! Visit any of our Moon Valley Nurseries, and we will be glad to help you handpick the perfect agave, as well as the perfect trees, and other plants that beautify any yard!
