The Carolina Cherry, Prunus caroliniana 'Compacta', is a staple on many Southwestern landscapes. Native to North Carolina and Texas, it is easy to see why this ornamental tree is so popular with homeowners. It loves the heat and thrives in full sun environments. Moon Valley Nurseries carries the 'Compacta' strain, an incredible topiary tree that is extremely hardy and durable.

Grown from only our best specimens, you are guaranteed to get the highest quality tree available from Moon Valley Nurseries. The 'Compacta' strain is more densely branched and is easily tamed, making it an ideal plant for use as a privacy screen, for use as a border, or as a hedge. When used as a shrub, many homeowners choose to shear the Carolina Cherry 'Compacta'. Its adaptability to shearing makes it a great foliage plant that can be sheared into conical shapes, columnar shapes or standard rectangular forms. Homeowners can bring an outstanding formal look to their landscape.

Drought and heat tolerant, this Carolina Cherry tree will need occasional watering once established. It adapts well to coastal exposure and needs little to no water once established in cooler climates. It is a smaller evergreen featuring bright, dark green foliage that looks beautiful on a variety of landscapes. Some people claim that the foliage has a scent reminiscent of maraschino cherries.

Once the small, creamy white, fragrant flowers bloom, you can expect pollinators in your garden. In the early spring, expect to see inedible, yet attractive black berries that contrast nicely with the foliage. Birds love this waterwise plant, too. Due to its slower growth rate, you may want to buy a bigger specimen to take advantage of the many benefits this Carolina Cherry 'Compacta' provides.

This Carolina Cherry 'Compacta' tree or shrub is sure to add value to your property no matter where or how you choose to plant this specimen. Feel free to speak with our nursery pro and ask us about placement ideas. You buy it and we can deliver and plant it!

Every time a plant is watered, the soil should be thoroughly saturated to a depth of at least 2 to 3 feet and at least as wide as a tree well. Very slow and deep watering is always recommended. During periods of extreme heat, we advise at least 1 additional time per week of watering for all varieties. For periods of heavy rain (1/2” or more) adjust accordingly by possibly skipping a watering session for that time.

I lined these along my drivaway to help seperate my house from our neighbors AND help as a barrier for basketball games in the driveaway.
